Chapter 5 Opening Discussion

“Whereas our ancestors (not of choice) were the first successful cultivators of the wilds of America, we their descendants feel ourselves entitled to participate in the blessings of her luxuriant soil.” - Richard Allen

African Americans have been present since the early colonies of the United States.  Consider how Richard Allen's statement. What are your thoughts?  You may want to rely on the African American philosophical lenses that were introduced the second day of classes.

  1. My opinions of the role that African Americans played in American history has been affirmed. I believe that African Americans built this country just as much as the white man but when you look in a text book little credit is given. Without African Americans, we would not have America as we know it today.

  2. I feel as if my thoughts of African-American culture has not changed. Our ancestors with through hell and back and still have done so much in history. American history may not include the truth, but our ancestors were truly remarkable people have shaped and formed America for us today

  3. The information we have been given affirms to me that African-American people are just as important as any other group of people in this country. They are the building blocks of this country in my opinion because of all of the hard work and labor they put in to build it.

  5. I think my understanding of African Americans in this history of this country has been affirmed with new knowledge. Often times, there is a lack of recognition in the unfortunate ways that blacks have largely contributed to the success and building of this nation. Richard Allen's quote, I think, is expressing the importance of such a thought.

  6. Even though African Americans were apart of the United States history since the times of colonies, but did not want to be apart of it. They feel like they should be credited with helping with the building of the nation.

  7. Wit the information I have now it does change my my view of the country we love in today. It is painful to know the African Americans went through and knowing that in that time they were never even seen as human. Before this class I started doing research I knew that the full story of the history of American wasn't being told and things were being hidden. Learning all the new things I've learned just affirmed my pervious thoughts.

  8. I had never realized the amount of individualism in African American culture until these past five weeks. African American culture is rooted in going against the grain and forging your own destiny regardless of the laws or what was accepted in American culture at the time. So my view has been changed in a sense that I was ignorant to the fact before and have now been enlightened.

  9. With this quote and information I gained from this course my understanding of African Americans role in American History was affirmed. I believe that African Americans had a major role in the overall development of the country. I believe credit isn't given to the African Americans because they were doing the white man's dirty work, while the white man was getting the praise. The African Americans were the back bone of the country.
